STORYTELLING. FOUNDATIONS OF THE CALL TO ACTION: SHARED MEANINGS
Why worry about being a great communicator when we have so many other things to do? Just to be able to do them!
In the presentations we face audiences that ask us to know the personal and professional needs that we propose to satisfy.
There are concurrent factors that hinder putting in perceived value for the listener the contributions that provide solutions to problems and challenges. As presenters we tend to be self-referential, with a lot to say, with demands and self-demands to say it well, with little preparation time.
The consequence is the neglect of what is relevant to the audience (and to us!). We describe an initiative, what is important to do, how to do it, when to do it and the budget, but the value proposition that we declare is disconnected with the perceived value proposition. The main driving force is distorted, distancing the possibility of achieving commitment to the call to action.
In organizations, this driving force is often heard as:
• “We get paid to do it, let’s do it”!
• “I pay you to do it, do it!”.
As presenters we get so caught up in the mission that we forget to effectively show why people would want to get involved.
Driving action requires that the audience rationally and emotionally identify with the roles of the stories we show, without imposing truths or lists of tasks to be completed, whatever the tone in which we do it.
For this, it is an essential requirement to prepare our presentations by editing the central concepts that we express, aligning them with the purpose and with the call to action that we propose.
The increase in the speed and scope of communications forces us to be effective.
Influencing is no longer a discretionary choice, it is essential to enter the game by participating in collaborative networks in which the value of meaning constitutes a source of vital energy.
Returning to the sentence from the beginning: Why worry about being an excellent communicator when we have so many other things to do? Just to be able to do them!
